Philly Mag Received 16 National City and Regional Magazine Award Nominations
The CRMA nominations are out, and we’re very, very excited.
Our “Best of Philly” issue was nominated in the “special issue” category for the CRMAs!
We’re thrilled to report that Philadelphia magazine has received 16 nominations in the 2023 National City and Regional Magazine Awards. The annual City and Regional Magazine Association (CRMA) competition, held in conjunction with the Missouri School of Journalism, honors journalists, design creatives, and staff members at city/regional magazines across the country in 35 categories. Among the 32 publications recognized for their 2022 work, Philly Mag is a finalist in 16 categories, including general excellence (aw, shucks!), writer of the year (shoutout to Victor Fiorillo!) and special issue (for “Best of Philly”).
Winners will be announced the first weekend in June, at the CRMA’s 47th annual conference in Baltimore. But it’s an honor just to be nominated, so let’s bask in the glory of our finalists, shall we?
With her enduring talent for turning the quirky minutiae of everyday life into transcendent prose, deputy editor Sandy Hingston is up for the Herb Lipson Award for Column Excellence for three of her Crankcase pieces (“The Other Left”; “The Real Drug Wars”; and “Over the River and Through the Woods”). And, receiving recognition for her reflections how the pandemic warped our sense of time, contributing editor Christine Speer Lejeune’s “The Lost Moments of COVID” was nominated in the essays/commentary/criticism category.
Lejeune also led the team as editor of July’s “150 Ways to Do Philly Like a Tourist” package, for which the magazine was nominated in the reader service category.
In the world of Foobooz, writer Jason Sheehan received a nomination in the profile category for his incredibly moving story on chef Chutatip “Nok” Suntaranon’s life, career and expansion to Fishtown (“Finishing What Kalaya Started”). Sheehan was also nominated for food and dining writing.
Also on the roster of finalists: David Murrell’s story on the aftermath of John Dougherty’s conviction (“Doc Is Dead! (For Real This Time… We Think)”) for feature story.
Senior reporter/A&E editor Victor Fiorillo was recognized with a nomination for writer of the year. He’s our writer of most years; we can’t argue with that one. Though this past year saw him cover everything from Delco Steaks’ meteoric rise to Dallyn Pavey’s 40-year search for her vanished dad.
That last piece (“The Disappearing Dad”) also got notice for its evocative spread design by Jamie Leary (one of three nominations for Leary).
The magazine’s ancillary publications Philadelphia Wedding and Be Well Philly were recognized in their categories.
And finally, Philadelphia magazine was also recognized for “general excellence” and “excellence online,” so yay, us!!!
