Jazmine Sullivan to Perform at Tree-Lighting Ceremony at City Hall
With holiday season kicking into high gear this week, all eyes are turning to the city’s Christmas trees, wondering when they’ll be lit for the season. Among the most prominent is the towering, living tree at City Hall, which, thanks to an announcement sent out today from the City of Philadelphia, we know will be illuminated on Thursday, December 3rd, with a special performance from Philly-born R&B darling Jazmine Sullivan.
“The tree lighting at City Hall is a Philadelphia tradition that kicks off the holiday season each year,” says Mayor Nutter in the release. “I am excited to have … Jazmine Sullivan join us for what is sure to be an electrifying evening. She is a great representation of Philadelphia’s rich cultural scene, and I am proud to have Jazmine serve as the headliner for our ceremony as I close out my time as Mayor of this great city.”
Sullivan is an eight-time Grammy-nominated artist who rose to fame after the release of her debut album, Fearless, in 2008. In January of this year, she released her third effort, Reality Show, and most recently contributed a fantastic version of Nina Simone’s “Baltimore” to the soundtrack to Netflix documentary What Happened, Miss Simone?.
She will be joined by a host of other local talents at the celebration, including Bobby Hill, the young man who all but brought tears to the pope’s eyes when he performed at the papal concert on the Parkway in September, R&B legend Carol Riddick with the Philadelphia Boys Choir, and Arielle Baril, from season 10 of America’s Got Talent.
The tree-lighting and celebration will take place in the Courtyard at City Hall and will be broadcast live on 6ABC. If you show up in person and brave what could be a chilly evening in the City of Brotherly Love, the City’s First Alarmers will be on hand with some free hot cocoa.
The event is free and open to the public, starting at 6 pm with “pre-programming and light entertainment” (aka when you should show up to nab a good spot in front of the stage.) The official ceremony kicks off at 7 pm, and the tree will be lit at 8.
