American Street Showroom

From Property: Once an electric company substation, the 11,000-square-foot space at American and Susquehanna has since been transformed into the American Street Showroom, an exhibit area known for showcasing original artifacts and artwork by Philadelphia-based design companies. Today, DesignPhiladelphia has included the Showroom on their itinerary as they’re having their first pop-up show featuring carpets and furniture by Baki Ildiz. Draft Mead Comes to Tria Taproom

From Foobooz: Tria Taproom is throwing a “Meadstravaganza.” Starting at noon on Tuesday, the Center City bar will have two meads on tap plus complimentary snacks from Rotisseur and Weckerly’s Ice Cream. Mead, which is a fermented honey drink is rarely spotted around town and even less often on tap. Tria will have a South African mead pouring as well as one from Londonderry, New Hampshire. muraLAB

The City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program is celebrating Mural Arts Month with an array of events that honor public art and the program's inspiring "art igniting change" initiative. This week, don't miss muraLAB: a live, TED-inspired event where you will hear from "an intimate group of unique and creative people who understand, in their own way, the role art plays in improving the civic landscape of cities." Eagles History Night

There's no better time to celebrate the colorful history of our beloved Birds than in the wake of yesterday's victory against the not-so-Giants. The program will be hosted by Ray Didinger, author of The New Eagles Encyclopedia, with special guests Merrill Reese, the voice of the Eagles, and Harold Carmichael, the great receiver and member of the Eagles Hall of Fame. The evening will include a trivia game with prizes and a Q&A session, plus each guest will receive a copy of Didinger's book. All proceeds benefit the Eagles Youth Partnership. Jane Smiley, Colm Toibin, and Tessa Hadley

Catch three distinguished writers at the Central Library this Tuesday evening. Pulitzer-winner Jane Smiley (pictured), award-winning novelist Colm Toibin, and The New Yorker contributor and author Tessa Hadley will each discuss their latest works. Detroit

A Pulitzer Prize finalist and winner of the OBIE Award for Best New American Play, Detroit sheds a disturbing yet witty light on the suburban middle class, exposing "the raw nerves that live just beneath the surface in the pursuit of the American dream." Written by award-winning playwright Lisa D’Amour and directed by Maria Mileaf, the play will run through November 9th. Be sure to check out the theater's schedule of post-show Patron Enrichment Programming (PEP) events–including Q&A sessions with the cast and backstage tours–which allow audiences to discover more about the themes within the play while offering a behind-the-scenes glimpse at production. Philadelphia Film Festival

The Philadelphia Film Festival kicks off this Thursday evening, with the Philadelphia premiere of Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance, a "bold, black comedy" from director Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Along with daily screenings, movie buffs can look forward to several special events throughout the fest, like swanky opening and closing night soirees. With ten days of films in a variety of genres–from indies to documentaries–the festival is a cinephile's dream. New Wave of J-Horror Film Series

President of Tidepoint Pictures and producer of Japanese indie films, Tetsuki Ijichi, brings his expertise to the Bryn Mawr Film Institute, beginning this Thursday. Ijichi is curating a three-part series of Japanese horror films in order to showcase new talent, introduce Japanese film trends to the Philadelphia area, and inject a bit of terror into local Halloween festivities.
