Remember way back to 2015? It was a simpler time, when we embraced bleak movies like Birdman. The Alejandro Inarritu film, starring Michael Keaton as a fading movie star, won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Cinematography. Keaton, whose character, in a meta-nod, played a Batman-like superhero, was nominated for Best Actor.
One component of the film not nominated was composer Antonio Sanchez’s tense, drum-heavy score — the Academy deemed it ineligible. But Sanchez, a jazz drummer, has plenty of other awards and accolades, including five Grammys.
He’ll be at the Annenberg Center on Saturday, November 19th, accompanying a screening of Birdman on stage with a live soundtrack. Tickets ($25) are here.
