The Oval Goes for a Pitch Perfect Opening
This is Spinal Tap @ Schuykill Banks by the Walnut Street Bridge | Thursday, July 14
Schuykill Banks turns the amp up to 11 with Rob Reiner’s 1984 mockumentary about (the fake) heavy metal band Spinal Tap. It’s rated R, mostly for cursing — 36 F-words, says IMDB’s parental guide.
Pitch Perfect @ The Oval | Friday, July 15
The summer pop-up park in front of the Art Museum opens Friday, with the clever Pitch Perfect (produced by Penn grad Elizabeth Banks, who has some of the funniest lines in the film) being shown for the first Food & Flicks movie night of the season. The “food” part is food trucks.
Carnivolution @ Tiberino Museum | Friday, July 15
There are a few pieces to this one: The Ellen Powell Tiberino Memorial Museum in West Philly is a tribute to the artist, filled with her murals and sculptures alongside art created by her husband, Joseph, who died earlier this year, and their children and friends, all spilling out into a large courtyard. For about a decade, the Squidling Bros. showed up in said courtyard several times a year to put on Carnivolution, a pretty unnerving circus sideshow with fire, freaks, clowns, acrobatics, sword swallowing and such. They’re bringing it back for one night in honor of Joseph.
My Girl @ Trolley Car Diner | Saturday, July 16
I don’t think I could actually take watching My Girl ever again. But for those of you who are emotionally stronger, it’s the next Moonlight Movies in Mt. Airy, outdoors in the parking lot of the Trolley Car Diner.
Comedy Jawn @ Boot & Saddle | Saturday, July 16
Amber Nelson headlines a comedy showcase at Boot & Saddle, with a lineup of impressive homegrown talent.
Bill Bellamy @ Punch Line | July 14-16
I always think of MTV Jams when I see Bill Bellamy’s name, but the comedian/actor has done a lot more than that, from his start on Def Comedy Jam to sitcoms and several big movies.
