Fringe Festival

Unlike most years, there is not one particular FringeArts show that everyone is talking about. Not sure why that is. But people do seem to be excited about Two Street, 99 Breakups, Safe Space, the Castellucci piece, Body Lautrec, The Adults (pictured), Found Theater Company's Deep Blue Sleep, and the one-actor White Rabbit Red Rabbit, which Philadelphia native David Morse debuted this weekend. The actor changes with each performance, and I'm excited to see actress Jennifer Kidwell take it on this Thursday. A full schedule of this week's shows is available here. Legendary Locals of Center City Philadelphia

Thom Nickels, Philadelphia-based author, poet, and journalist, will host a reading and signing on Monday evening for the launch of his new book: Legendary Locals of Center City Philadelphia. Nickels' latest work explores the city's notable figures, from sports legends to literary masters and every famed Philadelphian in between, both past and present. Monday, September 8th, 7 p.m., Barnes and Noble, 1805 Walnut Street.

A Celebration of David Lynch

Bryn Mawr Film Institute (BMFI) is hosting a couple film screenings and seminars in conjunction with Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts' upcoming "David Lynch: The Unified Field," the first major exhibition of the artist's work in the United States. First up, on September 9th, is 1980's The Elephant Man, and then, on September 10th, 1986's Blue Velvet. Put September 17th on your calendar, too. That's when BMFI will screen Mulholland Drive. Publetters at The Standard Tap

From Foobooz: PubLetters, the awesome (and free) idea that has been happening at Doobies recently, is coming to The Standard Tap starting September 9th. PubLetters runs from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and supplies you with all the essentials–stationery, stamps, and the inspiration to have a drink and write someone a letter. The Tap will also be hosting PubLetters September 16th, 23rd and 30th. Drink specials will be plentiful and provides a great excuse to unplug for the night. More here.

Battle of the Burger

Join us for Philadelphia Magazine's second annual Battle of the Burger, the carnivorous throw-down that will crown one burger the best in Philly. At this ultimate cook-off, guests can enjoy unlimited samples of all 20 competing burgers (!), sip Amstel Light, and cast a vote for their favorite contender. There will be music, games, and activities to enjoy, as well, if you can fight off the inevitable food coma. More information is available here. Tickets can be purchased online. So We Read On: How The Great Gatsby Came to Be and Why It Endures

Hey, Fitzgerald fiends: Maureen Corrigan, regular literary reviewer for NPR and The Washington Post, will read from her latest work, So We Read On: How The Great Gatsby Came to Be and Why It Endures, this Wednesday evening. Corrigan's book "encourages readers to rediscover the greatness of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s enduring masterpiece." Tickets for the reading are available online. Wednesday, September 10th, 7:30 p.m., $15 or $7 for students, Central Library, 1901 Vine Street.

"Cut & Paste: New Mixed-Media and Digital Collages"

Inliquid will present the opening reception of local artist Jen McClearly's new solo exhibition: "Cut & Paste: New Mixed-Media and Digital Collages." McClearly will showcase her mixed-media and digital work, "which explores the connections between these two very different ways of creating layered collage images." The exhibit will be open until 9 p.m. for Second Thursday hours. Thursday, September 11th, 6 p.m.-9 p.m., The Hall at Crane Arts, 1400 North American Street (1st floor).

Philadelphia Art Alliance: Fall Exhibitions

Philadelphia Art Alliance will celebrate their Fall 2014 Exhibitions with an opening reception this Thursday. Three solo exhibitions–each exploring different mediums and influences–will be on display, by artists Christina Day, Lauren Dombrowiak, and Heather Ujiie. Thursday, September 11th, 6 p.m.- 8 p.m., Philadelphia Art Alliance, 251 S. 18th Street.
