DO THIS: U.S. Air Guitar Competition This Weekend at Johnny Brenda’s
Shower singers, take a seat. This one’s not for you. This is for those of you rocking out in your bedrooms to, I don’t know, Van Halen or something equally anthemic, shredding your air guitars within every inch of your lives. You’ve put on shows in that room that would make rock gods tremble. It’s high time you take a bow.
Your chance is coming this weekend, when the U.S. Air Guitar Regional Qualifier returns to Philadelphia after a one-year break. The event—taking place at Johnny Brenda’s—calls inner rock stars to show off their air-guitar skills for the chance to compete in the 2014 Air Guitar World Championship in Oulu, Finland, which, apparently, is the “birthplace of competitive air guitar.”
The night will be hosted by “Master of Airemonies” Doug “The Thunder” Stroock, and will include two rounds. First, competitors will perform to a song of their choosing, then, in round two, all top-scoring air guitarists will be asked to improvise to a surprise compulsory song. The person with the highest score earns the local title, and the top three will advance to the Mid-Atlantic semifinals in Washington D.C. with the hopes of taking their antics to Finland in August.
To sign up to compete, go here. Just want to watch? The competition takes place this Saturday night, July 19th, at Johnny Brenda’s. $10 tickets can be had here.
I really feel like I need to say “rock on” right now.
