Wilma WynTix Offers Big Theater,
Smaller Prices
For the next three seasons, the Wilma Theater will offer its regular productions at a deeply discounted rate — $25 standard, $10 for students — in a bold initiative to broaden their audience. That’s some extra cash to spend on pre-theater dining, maybe a few extra pennies in the “new opera glasses” fund. More importantly, the theater hopes its WynTix initiative will create a more diverse and accessible theater, with an audience that reflects a greater portion of the Philadelphia populace.
The initiative was made possible by a grant from the Wyncote Foundation at the recommendation of Leonard C. Haas. Haas is thrilled about the changes, stating, “For me personally, I think it’s critical for my artistic colleagues to see the quality theater produced here in Philadelphia, which is why the theater industry discount is a particularly important component of the WynTix initiative. The Wilma is a real artistic hub for both audiences and theater artists and I look forward to seeing how subsidized ticketing will bring all communities together to experience live theater.”
The 2014/15 season is set to include Gina Gionfriddo’s new comedy, Rapture, Blister, Burn, and back-to-back runs of Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guilderstern are Dead (with mostly the same cast). The subsidized tickets don’t take effect until next season, but subscriptions for next season will go on sale March 19th with the first preview of Don Juan Comes Home From Iraq.
