One of the more intriguing aspects of free agency for the Eagles might have been a move they didn’t make.
On the first day of the new league year, the Birds were linked to right tackle Jake Long. Eventually, Long ended up signing a four-year, $34 million deal with the Rams that includes up to $20 million in guaranteed money if he stays healthy.
The Eagles also expressed interested in right tackle Eric Winston once he was cut by the Chiefs. Les Bowen of the Daily News reports that the team has a number it’s willing to sign Winston at, and a deal is still possible, depending on what he gets offered elsewhere.
So what does all this mean for the current players on the roster?
The hits just keep on coming for the Eagles’ offensive line.
Julian Vandervelde told reporters Wednesday that he is being activated to the 53-man roster. And while the corresponding move has not been announced, Todd Herremans is expected to be placed on injured reserve.
We don’t have the All-22 images yet, but ESPN did a good job of providing clear shots of the seven sacks the Eagles allowed in Monday night’s game against the Saints. So here’s one man’s attempt to figure out what in the world was going on with the Birds’ protection schemes.
Another blow for an already injury-riddled offensive line.
Todd Herremans was forced to the sidelines late in the first quarter with a right foot/ankle injury. His return is doubtful.
The veteran tackle was pulling on a LeSean McCoy run to the left side, was tripped and landed awkwardly. He was assisted off the field and after a brief inspection on the trainers table, was carted into the locker room.
Howard Mudd‘s offensive line is already in shambles, missing starters Jason Peters (Achilles), Jason Kelce (ACL) and Danny Watkins (ankle). At the time Herremans left, Michael Vick had already been sacked three times.
Demetress Bell replaced Herremans at right tackle.

During the bye week, Andy Reid said multiple times that he was evaluating everything.
On defense, that meant changing coordinators. But considering Marty Mornhinweg kept play-calling duties and Michael Vick remained the starting quarterback, what would it mean offensively?
That was one of the questions going into Sunday’s game. And while the offense only produced 17 points, Reid and Mornhinweg actually some drastic changes.
Here’s a look at those changes, along with a player-by-player breakdown of the offensive line, including rookie Dennis Kelly

The prospect of left tackle Jason Peters returning during the regular season seems more real than ever.
“There’s a chance,”Andy Reid acknowledged on Wednesday.
A day after the loss to the Lions, a fed-up Andy Reid had some harsh words for his offense.
“The last two drives offensively were pathetic. They were pathetic from a coaching standpoint and they were pathetic from a players’ standpoint,” he said.
What drove Reid to this level of irritation? We took a look at the coaches tape to find out.
The area where the Eagles are most likely to shake up personnel during the bye week is the offensive line.
The problem? They don’t have a lot of options. We’ll see if they sign someone or even make a trade. But given the way the roster currently stands, let’s take a look at all five spots to see where things could be headed in the final 10 games.
