With every Eagles loss, it’s impossible not to look ahead and think about Jeffrey Lurie’s comments about 8-8 not being good enough for Andy Reid to stay in 2013.

But the head coach insists his future isn’t weighing on his mind.

We don’t have the All-22 images yet, but ESPN did a good job of providing clear shots of the seven sacks the Eagles allowed in Monday night’s game against the Saints. So here’s one man’s attempt to figure out what in the world was going on with the Birds’ protection schemes.

Eagles general manger Howie Roseman received a four-to-five year contract extension in June, according to a report.

Jeffrey Lurie gave Roseman the deal when Joe Banner stepped down as team president. The timing is significant because it suggests Lurie views Roseman’s performance in a different category than that of Andy Reid. As has been well-documented, Lurie said before the season that an 8-8 record would not be good enough for Reid to remain the head coach in 2013.

But based on the report, it seems likely that Roseman will be part of Lurie’s brain trust in picking a new head coach if he does in fact part ways with Reid after the season.

The Eagles are 3-5 again, same as last year.

Sloppy play. Self-inflicted wounds. Questions about whether they care. It’s all there. And, after their fourth straight loss, the talk about the  head coach’s job security is again the dominant topic.

And the players, like in 2011, are defending Andy Reid. They say it is motivation to play better.

While the sentiment may be genuine, everything seems much more robotic the second time around. This is history repeating, Monday confirmed. With that knowledge, it’s hard to buy into words that we know won’t prove out.

Listening to Andy Reid after Monday night’s loss to the Saints, it seemed clear that he’s run out of answers.

“Pretty simple synopsis of the game. When you’re 0-for-5 in the red zone, give up seven sacks, and your tackling is terrible, then you’re going to struggle to win football games in this league,” Reid said.

There are some major hurdles to overcome.

Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports recently reported that there has been tension between Michael Vick and Eagles assistant coaches.

Today, Vick denied the report.

“That’s absolutely false. Coach [Andy Reid] and I never had that conversation,” Vick said. “Everything we talked about in that room was personal, was man-to-man, but that never came up.”

What does the Andy Reid drama mean to a recent import, exactly?

Everyone in this town knows the tale backwards and forwards. Every win and every loss is a piece of a larger mosaic. We know where it fits and what it signifies. Do trade acquisitions and free-agent signings, plucked from one culture and plopped into another, appreciate what this all means? Do they understand the magnitude of this season?

Probably not.

Before the Eagles held their players-only meeting last week, Andy Reid and Michael Vick had a lengthy sit-down, two team sources told Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports.

The pair cleared the air on a variety of issues, but perhaps the most noteworthy item in the report was that Vick believed some assistant coaches wanted him benched.

Over the past couple days at the Novacare Complex, players and coaches have tried to articulate what exactly has gone wrong with an offense that is scoring just 17.1 points per game, 28th in the league.

During training camp, it seemed like the 2012 version wouldn’t be far off from last year’s group. Michael Vick and company produced 64 pass plays of 20+ yards in 2011, eighth-best in the league. The plan was to cut down on turnovers, get DeSean Jackson back on track and resume the high-flying, big-play attack.

But a few things happened to derail that plan. Demetress Bell failed to be even adequate filling in for Jason Peters at left tackle. Another hole was created when center Jason Kelce suffered a season-ending injury. And the offense failed to fix the turnover problem.

After the Cardinals game, Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg decided to switch things up. More balance, coupled with a methodical passing game, was Plan B. If the defense could come up big (like it did against the Giants), perhaps that kind of offense would be good enough for the Eagles to get into the playoffs.

Nope. That hasn’t worked either.

A lot of Eagles players have grown weary of the talk. It’s not what is said during the week that counts, it’s the way they perform on game day that proves their mettle. It is a common refrain among the leaders in particular.

“You can only say so much and sometimes I get tired of talking,” said Michael Vick following the loss to Atlanta. “You get tired of talking and it’s more about letting your actions speak louder than your words.”

Ironically, this same group is hopeful that words will help save them.

Yes, all the speculation was getting to Michael Vick.

“I’m human. It does tend to bother you because I have emotions just like everybody else. It’s not like you can just block certain things out sometimes,” said Vick. “You want to have that comfort level, you want to know everything is going to be what it’s is going to be at the end of the day. When you have that type of support, it’s easy to go out and make it all work. I kind of let it get to me, to be honest. But now it’s a totally different feel for me and I’m ready to go.”

Andy Reid made it sound today like Danny Watkins is unlikely to be ready Monday night, meaning rookie Dennis Kelly should expect to get his second straight start at right guard.

The possibility exists that Kelly could play himself into the starting job. Watkins was inconsistent through the first seven games, and Reid was asked if the former first-round pick will definitely get his job back once he’s healthy.

Andy Reid was in full damage-control mode Wednesday afternoon when he met with reporters and addressed the Eagles’ quarterback situation.

“I know a lot’s been said in regards to Michael [Vick],” Reid said. “I’ve learned a long time ago with you guys that there’s a time and a place when you’re upset, and I was upset after the game – not at Michael Vick. I was upset, starting with myself and not getting my team ready to play and work it from there, but I’ve learned to step back and evaluate. So that was my point to you. My point wasn’t that I was going to bench Michael Vick. It was that I needed to step back and evaluate before I came to you with something. So I mentioned yesterday that Michael, in regards to that, was the quarterback, is the quarterback, and will continue to be the quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles. So I can’t make it any more clearer than that.”
