Blokes, Rejoice! Old-School Barbershop Opens in Old City
Although Blokes Barbershop only opened a week ago, it’s been a long time in the making. Owner Duke Dunne, a Manchester native with the most perfect British accent you could ever imagine (he only moved to America four years ago), has been cutting hair for over 40 years. From killer haircuts to men’s accessories and every grooming tool you never thought you needed, Bloke’s Barbershop has you covered.
The space is everything you’d expect in a Brit’s barbershop: old-school leather barber chairs, hardwood floors, and a 1963 Seeberg jukebox fully loaded with vinyl. For a guy who considers Marlin Brando and Johnny Depp among his greatest style influences, Dunne certainly got the aesthetic down.
Blokes Barbershop offers haircuts, grooming and straight-razor shaves alongside a smorgasbord of men’s care products, jewelry, books, candles and “the funkiest hats you’ve ever seen in your life,” a surprisingly great retail selection which is curated and managed by Dunne’s wife and business partner Jill Ervais.
“We intend to be the place for gents’ accessories. There’s loads of places you can find women’s accessories, but for guys? Nowhere,” says Dunne.
Head on down to this new Old City barbershop for a fresh cut, some new cufflinks, or to crack open a cold one. You might even get lucky and witness an impromptu jam session with Dunne and musician Jaguar Wright. (She’s toured with The Roots. Casual.) But sorry, that ukulele is not for sale.
