8 Ways to Transform Your Boring Fall Uniform

How to mix up ye olde flannel-leggings-boots combo.

Fall outfit

There’s nothing wrong with this, except for that fact that literally everyone else is wearing it.

Things we love: haunted houses, hayrides, corn mazes, apple picking, pumpkin patches, etc. Chances are if you’ve gone to one of these fall activities in the past five years, you’ve worn some version of the Fall Fashion Starter Pack – button-up flannel shirt, leggings or skinny jeans, tall boots in brown or black, maybe even a puffy vest (see above). This leads us to things we don’t love: boring outfits, feeling basic, looking like everyone else.

While there is absolutely nothing wrong with a staple wardrobe item here and there, you’ve gotta spice up your look beyond the basics. The fix is simple; swap out classics for trendier items to update your look and make you stand out in a be-flanneled crowd. Look and learn.

fall look 1

Pants: Urban Outfitters. Vest: River Island. Shirt: Uniqlo. Boots: Vince.

The Staple: Knee-high boots; flannel shirt.

The Swap: Go for blue-grey knee-high boots instead of your standard brown ones. Wear cords instead of jeans; the texture is everything right now. Finally, layer on a shearling vest instead of a puffy one.

LOOK2

Shoes: Free People. Pants: Zara. Jacket: Urban Outfitters.

The Staple: Skinny jeans.

The Swap: Wear jewel-toned pants instead of plain denim. Try ankle booties instead of knee-highs (how amazing are these?). And a faux fur topper is a so-chic alternative to a denim jacket or vest.

The Staple: Flannel shirt; sneakers.

The Swap: Leave the leggings at home. Instead, throw on a deep-toned dress; tie the flannel around your waist; balance it all out with a fringed top-handle bag.
