Editor’s note: Of course, officials in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey are cautioning everyone against flocking to the Jersey Shore en masse this Memorial Day weekend. But buying a Shore house lets you enjoy summer at the shore while continuing to practice good social distancing. As this marks the start of vacation season, we will feature an outstanding Shore house for sale each week throughout the summer.

Readers of a certain age may remember Philadelphia Inquirer metro “Scene” columnist Clark DeLeon’s annual summer columns filed from “Undisclosed Location, the different Jersey Shore.”

We’ve long suspected that “undisclosed location” was somewhere on Long Beach Island, the northernmost of the barrier islands to which Philadelphians traditionally flock each summer. Unlike the islands to its south, Long Beach Island doesn’t draw hordes of weekend day-trippers or weekly vacation renters each summer. There’s nary a boardwalk to be found in its six municipalities, and the atmosphere in the summer is very laid-back and family-friendly.

LBI also attracts a tonier crowd than the islands to its south (Seven Mile Island excluded), and that crowd also splits in two at the end of the one bridge connecting the island to the mainland; as we put it in an article written sometime in the 1970s, “the haves turn right and the have-mores turn left” at the end of the Manahawkin Bay Bridge.

You’ll turn left at the end of the bridge to reach this bayside contemporary house for sale in Harvey Cedars. Designed by Samuel Gordon Architects and built in 2013, the Kurtz Residence sits right on Barnegat Bay and has its own 185-foot-long dock and boatlift stretching from its expansive deck.

The photos you see here are the only ones currently available of this house; the listing agent promises more soon, and there are a few others on SGA’s own website. But these should be enough to show you that this bayfront residence is a masterful contemporary reinterpretation of the Jersey Shore vernacular.

main floor

Main floor

Its totally open main floor combined with its location by the bay and the Big Ass fan in its great room mean you shouldn’t need to run the geothermal climate control all that often, even in the hottest summer months. On more pleasant days, you can relax on the screened porch, and anytime the sun shines is the right time to enjoy the expansive bayside deck, whether by yourself, with your family or with friends.

It has a well-appointed master suite upstairs with its own private balcony overlooking the bay. And its four other bedrooms also have en-suite bathrooms.

Finally, like most bayside houses at the Shore, it comes with an amenity like no other:

Is that enough to make you want to live here? It’s sure enough for us.
