On the Market (Again): Rock Rose Estate in Radnor
A survivor of the Titanic called this magnificent historic estate home for a good long while. You can too now.
Are you a charity rainmaker? We have the perfect house for you today: a spectacular Italianate mansion in Radnor that’s built for entertaining.
Do you appreciate history? This house for sale has a distinguished one.
And if you’re both, you’ve hit the jackpot, for you can host grand fundraisers in a house with a story to tell if you buy this property.
Here’s the story, abbreviated: “Rock Rose” dates to 1908-09, when the architectural firm of Zantziger, Borie & Medary designed it for Edward K. Rowland. The Zantziger firm would go on to work with Julian Abele of the Horace Trumbauer firm on the designs of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Rowland would go on to lease the home in 1916 to George and Lucile Brooke. Mrs. Brooke almost didn’t live to make this house her home, but she was one of the survivors of the sinking of the Titanic, so fortune clearly smiled on her.
Several generations of Brookes have maintained this spectacular house lovingly, updating it as needed. They’ve been interested in selling this mansion for a while, however: we featured it when it was last on the market in 2016, and it had been listed for sale four more times before that.
This house was designed to handle a crowd. It has a huge living room, a large formal dining room, and a ballroom, seen here outfitted for a large banquet.
Its multi-room kitchen can handle that banquet. It has plenty of work space, an eat-in table and commercial-grade appliances, including Traulsen refrigerators and freezers, a large stand mixer and several warming drawers.
You can put up guests in its two guest bedrooms, both of which have en suite baths, and invite them to join you in the morning in the sunny casual dining room.
If you’d like to entertain in a more casual manner, its full finished basement can handle that. It also contains a large, temperature- and humidity-controlled wine cellar.
Its outdoor spaces are as spectacular as its indoor ones. These include a gorgeously set pool, an octagonal gazebo, and a tennis court. There’s also a conservatory and greenhouse on the property.
And when you’re done with entertaining, a huge yet comfortable master suite awaits you and your spouse. In addition to a closet for each of you, it has a bathroom for each of you too. There are five more bedrooms for your family – or if your family’s not that large, you can put up a few more guests in them.
Is this your time to live in a truly grand home? The owners sure hope it is.
