All That Wood Surround You in Kennett Square for $675K

Between its striking interiors and its forested envelope, this contemporary home is a symphony in wood. (Who cares if some of it's fake?)

Slogging through listings in search of homes to feature sometimes leads to feelings of despair as I run across thousands of rote variations on the same neotraditional or faux-Colonial theme and endless open-plan boxes.

Then up pops a home like this truly unique composition in Chester County mushroom country, and I’m reminded why I enjoy this line of work.

Kennett Square is just a little ways past the sylvan Brandywine Valley but shares much of its character. That character includes homes with personality in wooded surroundings like this one.

Living room

Dining room

Kitchen

This contemporary home is a celebration of wood. From the rough-hewn front door to the incredibly warm kitchen to the soaring dining room attached to it, this home shows off the ways wood can be used to enhance comfort and add élan.

Master bedroom

Bedroom

Bathroom

Other elements of this home’s design use other natural materials to complement that wood, like the stone of the living-room fireplace. The stucco of the one in the master bedroom also enhances this home’s one-with-nature feel.

Deck, hot tub and exterior rear

Side yard and driveway

Pool

And speaking of nature, the home’s 5,200-square-foot-lot abounds in trees and greenery. A 2,280-square-foot deck, bigger than many houses’ interiors, has been plunked in the middle of all that green to create a great outdoor space for entertaining and relaxing, which you no doubt will want to do in the pool and hot tub.

But there is a downside to wood: When exposed to the elements, it requires regular maintenance lest it deteriorate. And often enough, it deteriorates anyway. Which may explain why one of the biggest of the many improvements made to this home over the last few years is its cladding in HardiePlank siding. (What’s that, you ask? We’ll let James Hardie tell you.)

That’s one less thing you’ll have to tend to going forward once you move into this home. Many of the others have also been taken care of for you: new Pella windows and French doors, a completely refreshed kitchen, a new driveway and flagstone front entrance steps.

Given all that this home offers, inside and out, what wood you do? I think the answer’s obvious.
