Morning Headlines: What Caused Roof Collapse in Kensington?
The roof of a 5-story building came crashing down onto the street below in Kensington on Thursday just after 2 p.m., according to 6abc. One person was removed from the building without injury. The building, known as the Putnam Building at 2nd and Turner Street, is owned by the Kensington South Community Development Corporation and used for offices and art studios.
It’s fortunate that there wasn’t more damage. While the weight of the ice and snow might have played a major factor in the crush, NBC10 reports neighbors claim the snow might have deterred cars from parking near the building. Knowing that the roof needed “work,” KSCDC was in the process of applying for a grant to fix it.
Poor winter weather conditions are a serious threat to buildings old and new. Back in January, bricks fell from the building in Center City, causing a partial roof collapse inside the adjacent Lululemon store and injuring three shoppers.
