Discover More Reasons to Love Ocean City, NJ

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
Ocean City is known as a family-friendly oceanside resort, with its motto as “America’s greatest family resort!” It continues to attract many partial residents during the summer months, with its  miles of guarded beaches, boardwalk and downtown shopping and dining district. Full-time residents, of course, often prefer the sleepy calm that comes over the town between tourist seasons.

Ocean City was first known as Peck’s Beach, likely named for whaler John Peck who used the island as a staging spot for his whaling operation. In 1879, four Methodist ministers sought it out as a good place for a Christian retreat and camp, and chose the name “Ocean City.” The group established the Ocean City Association and began planning the resort town we know today. By 1883 the first bridge was built to the island, and a railroad soon followed as the town began to flourish and grow into the city it is today.

The boardwalk in Ocean City is perhaps one of the most well-known on the East Coast. It runs for two and half miles and includes two family amusement parks with rides and carnival games. Bike and surrey rentals are available for families who want to cruise the boardwalk on wheels and check attractions like the water park, mini-golf, arcades or Music Pier. There are also plenty of favorite spots to grab a bite to eat, including Mack & Manco’s Pizza, Johnson’s Popcorn and Kohr Bros. Frozen Custard.

Ocean City is great for families as well as couples looking to live right on the beautiful New Jersey coast and enjoy its beaches all year round. It’s also a popular place for a second residence, as its summer activities attract many.
