Here’s How to Pull Off a Wedding Dress Code

While “black tie” and “cocktail attire” dress codes are always popular choices for Big Day celebrations, many couples today are taking things a step further and asking their guests to look the part — whether it’s a certain color palette or even a particular theme. But being practical and kind with your request is of utmost importance to ensure your guests feel comfortable and get into the spirit, too. Here, Christiane Lehman, owner of Center City-based planning firm Truly You Events, shares how to ensure your guests embrace the theme. When a dress code works
Themes do wonders for small gatherings or destination weddings. “Asking guests to rock ‘Western Chic’ looks to a welcome party in Montana enhances the fun,” says Lehman. But provide ample notice.
Be polite
List the dress code on your invitation, then elaborate on your website. But use soft language, Lehman advises: “Please indulge us by wearing shades of pink” can encourage compliance without sounding overly demanding.
Communicate your vision
Lehman suggests visual aids, like mood boards on your website, to help guests understand. She also recommends broadening your theme: “Shades of Blue” will go over better than saying “Cerulean Blue.”
Be realistic
While it’s tempting to dictate every detail, “Remember that it’s an ask if you decide to encourage specific colors or styles,” Lehman says. “Not every person is fashion-forward. Communicate that your attire cues are encouraged but optional.”
