A Fun-Loving Barbecue Wedding at a Kensington Arts Center
The brides decorated with Volkswagen Beetles and donated to homeless pets on behalf of their guests.
Looking for a wedding that’s equal parts chill, cool and colorful? This fall wedding at Taller Puertorriqueno’s El Corazón Cultural Center, photographed by Captured by Caity, is just that. Featuring Volkswagen Beetles, Sweet Lucy’s Smokehouse barbecue and Tattooed Mom-inspired cocktails, the Big Day was authentic and fun — exactly what the brides wanted it to be.
Alicia Conquest was an assistant coach at the school at which she teaches when Rashida Stamps accepted a position as head coach on that same team. According to the pair, it was a match made in heaven as coaching — and life — partners.
After practice one evening, the pair went on their first date at Han Dynasty. “I remember the food and conversation being good, but what was most memorable was the way we left off,” Rashida says, referring to a backseat kiss in Alicia’s car to end the night. “When we were leaving, we both almost said, ‘I love you.’ We both felt the phrase.”
On September 26th, 2018, Alicia’s birthday, Rashida proposed, asking Alicia if she could be her forever birthday present. They shared the sweet moment privately, then headed to dinner.
A year later, in September 2019, Alicia and Rashida wed at Taller Puertorriqueno’s arts and culture space in West Kensington. In lieu of wedding favors, the newlyweds made a donation to homeless pets on behalf of their guests. They decorated the reception with Volkswagen Beetle toy cars because they still play the “punch buggy” game in the car, served a decadent barbecue spread from Sweet Lucy’s Smokehouse for dinner, and enjoyed signature cocktails inspired by the menu at Tattooed Mom, one of their favorite bars.
“Alicia and I did exactly what we wanted to do,” says Rashida. “We had the food we loved, the drinks we loved, the music we loved, and a venue that was significant to us. I think it spoke ‘Alicia and Rashida’ one hundred percent.”
