This East Falls Couple Had Their Wedding in an Airplane Hangar

The Big Day featured paper airplanes, book pages — and airplanes, of course.

While there are many one-of-a-kind wedding venues in and around Philadelphia, occasionally we stumble upon a wedding that exceeds our expectations for creativity. This Philadelphia Glider Council wedding is one of them. Photographed by Shannon Collins, the ceremony took place on an airfield — followed by a reception inside an aircraft hangar — and featured fun details like paper airplanes and storybook pages.

Liz Crowder called dibs on Andrew Serota four months before the pair met. Both in a mutual friend’s bridal party, Liz admits she “investigated” each groomsman in the months leading up to the wedding and decided Andrew piqued her interest. When the wedding rolled around, she piqued his interest, too: “She was dressed very fashionably and was wearing a lot of colors,” Andrew remembers.

After the wedding, the pair had what they consider to be their first date — a car ride to meet their friends. Andrew picked Liz up at 30th Street Station after a day of travel, bringing along Continental shoe string fries and cheesesteak egg rolls so his date wouldn’t be hangry on their journey.

Seven years later, Andrew, an attorney, and Liz, a librarian, vacationed in Wales. (Liz studied abroad in Wales during college and loved it, which inspired the trip.) The pair hiked Snowdon mountain on the trip, and when they reached the mountaintop, Andrew proposed. “I knew if I waited to ask at the summit, Liz would have to say yes to avoid an even more treacherous traverse down the side of the mountain,” Andrew jokes.

On September 22, 2018, Liz and Andrew wed surrounded by family, friends and gliders at Philadelphia Glider Council in Perkasie. The Big Day involved many one-of-a-kind details — it took place at an airfield and an aircraft hangar, after all — such as paper airplanes that the bride folded out of book pages, homemade blueberry jam that guests took home as wedding favors, and happy hour music sang by the mother of the bride and her boyfriend.

The bride and groom sum up the big day in four simple, but important, words: “Glad we did it.”
