This Old City Winter Wedding Makes Us Feel So Cozy Inside

Cold and dreary looks SO good on this couple.

The cozy Old City union of Susannah Dusch and Matthew McInerney is giving us serious winter wedding feels this AM. Filled with personal touches — nodding to the name of their cat in their wedding cocktail, handmade wreath wedding favors —  this intimate celebration proves small-scale weddings are just as memorable as the large ones.

Suzy and Matt first met shortly after they both moved to New York City, despite having both attended Savannah College of Art and Design and graduating the same year. After slowly putting the pieces together, they realized that they had some mutual friends — and that Suzy had attended a party at Matt’s house in Savannah without meeting him.  Suzy had been warned that Matt was “cute but very sarcastic,” which she quickly found to be true on their first date at a trendy Upper East Side Mexican restaurant, while Matt was enthralled by the “fiery redhead” who was able to keep up with his jokes and dish them right back. The pair, 23 at the time, took their time before getting engaged six years later.

While falling in love with each other, Matt and Suzy were also falling in love with NYC  together, turning many city landmarks into landmarks in their relationship as well. On a cold Saturday in December of 2015, Matt instructed Suzy to pack her bags for a surprise trip. He took her to all of the places around the city that helped them fall in love, discussing at each location why it meant so much to him. The pair eventually arrived at Central Park’s Conservancy Garden. Here, Matt explained that this spot was about to mean a lot more to them because it would be where they got engaged, and then he promptly got down on one knee. Afterwards, the pair headed to a surprise engagement party.

Exactly one year and two months later, Suzy and Matt shared their “I do’s” in an intimate and romantic candle-lit ceremony at Old City’s Olde Bar surrounded by friends and family. English ivy was draped over the mantle and through vintage brass candlesticks from Maggpie Rentals, and petite floral arrangements were scattered across the tables.

Instead of boring old table numbers, the creative couple directed guests to their seat with illustrations representing important parts of their life, such as places they’ve lived, furry friends, important trips, etc. These milestones were also present on their custom invitations and save-the-dates.

Guests sipped on blood orange vodka gimlets, dubbed “The Riddler” in homage to the couple’s cat Ridley, and snacked on a myriad of cakes — hazelnut with mocha buttercream, rum cake, raspberry mirror with vanilla buttercream, carrot cake — plus a surprise winter berry pie for the groom. The couple swayed to “Can’t Nobody Love You” by the Zombies for their first dance, and road-tripped through the north and south of New Zealand for their honeymoon. They currently live in Philly, where Matt works as a graphic designer and Suzy works as a project manager in the fashion industry.
