The city is holding a celebration rally today for the Philadelphia Soul, who recently won the 2016 Arena Football League World Championship.
If you didn’t know about it, you should. Mayor Jim Kenney agrees.
“The Soul has brought home a city championship and we are proud to recognize this day,” Kenney said in a celebratory statement. “I declare Wednesday, August 31st, 2016, ‘Philadelphia Soul World Champions Day’ in Philadelphia and hope everybody comes out to celebrate the Soul for making our city proud.”
Last Friday in ArenaBowl XXIX, the Philadelphia Soul beat the Arizona Rattlers 56 to 42, for their second championship win. The Soul are the second local team to win a championship this year (behind the Philadelphia Spinners, who won the Major League Ultimate title in July), so let’s tip our hats to our local teams, because they’re probably the best we’ve got. Though as our Dan McQuade reported Monday, the last time the Soul won a Championship, the Phillies won the World Series shortly after. Here’s to hoping.
The Philadelphia Soul celebration will kick off at noon today at the City Hall Courtyard. It’s scheduled to last 45 minutes, so get there on time. Kenney will join the full team, the owners, former Philadelphia Eagle Ron Jaworski, the coaches and the dance team.
