It’s Official: Josh Shapiro Is Running for Attorney General
As expected, Montgomery County Commission Chairman Josh Shapiro will run for attorney general.
The news — via the AP’s Mark Levy — sets up Shapiro, a Democrat, to mount an intra-party challenge to Kathleen Kane. Despite her legal troubles, the current attorney general has vowed to run for re-election.
Shapiro has long been seen as an up-and-comer. The Democratic Party establishment, in fact, wooed him furiously to make a run for Pat Toomey’s Senate seat before turning to Katie McGinty as its standard-bearer in the primaries against Joe Sestak and John Fetterman.
When Shapiro didn’t choose to run for Senate, though, it had been thought he was preparing a run for Kane’s office.
AP reports he’ll make a formal announcement on Tuesday. PoliticsPA reports that other Dems in the race include Allegheny County DA Stephen Zappala, Northampton DA John Morganelli, prosecutor Jack Stollsteimer and attorney Dave Fawcett.
