U.S. Supreme Court Declines Emergency Stay Request From Kim Davis
“Ms. Davis’ choices are clear: She must either choose to follow the law or resign her public position.”
Those are the words from HRC Senior Vice President JoDee Winterhof after the U.S Supreme Court declined Ms. Davis’ petition for an emergency stay on a court order that required her to issue same-sex marriage licensees in Kentucky. The Rowan County clerk become something of an anti-LGBT celebrity after a video showed Ms. Davis denying a gay couple a marriage license after the Supreme Court’s early summer marriage equality ruling.

HRC’s Winterhof went on to state, “A public official’s personal religious opinion does not give her the privilege to trample over the rights of others. Freedom of religion is important, and Ms. Davis has the fundamental right to believe what she likes. But as a public servant, she does not have the right to pick and choose which laws she will follow or which services she will provide.”
