Jim Kenney on Fired Waldron Mercy Lesbian Teacher

Yesterday, we shared the news that Waldron Mercy Academy fired a lesbian teacher, most likely because of her sexuality, and that parents from the school were outraged. However, they aren’t the only ones who are upset over the termination of Margie Winters.

Philadelphia mayoral candidate Jim Kenney just released a statement regarding the actions of the school. His comments read as follows:

“I applaud the parents and community members at Waldron Mercy for their outcry over the dismissal of a clearly beloved, talented educator. Discrimination and hate have no place in the Church’s teachings and certainly not in its schools. I urge the school administrators to reinstate Margie Winters.”

Our reporting yesterday indicated that, “Winters was fired in June after eight years at Waldron Mercy. The school won’t say why she was let go, citing the confidentiality of personnel matters, but the writing seems to be on the wall: Winters was apparently fired because she is in a gay marriage.”
