The Best Thing That Happened This Week

Burgers, potato salad, fireworks — Independence Day is as American as blueberry pie. Yet it honors, in its haze of humidity and sparklers, a passel of dreamers who boldly set out to justify why they’d gone to war against the mightiest kingdom on earth. Granted, it was over taxes — hey, who ever said America wasn’t all about the Benjamins? But it was also over liberty and equality and the pursuit of happiness — the same stuff you were arguing about with Uncle Frankie while you ate that potato salad yesterday. We hold this truth to be self-evident: Here in this city, 239 years ago, those crazy dreamers were the start of something big.
