DNC Names PA Man Director of LGBT Engagement

Pennsylvania native Sean Meloy has been hired by the Democratic National Committee (DNC) as director of LGBT engagement. Meloy is a graduate of Penn State and former aide and campaign manager of PA U.S. Congressman Mike Doyle.

In his job as director of LGBT engagement, Meloy is tasked with assembling LGBT support for the 2016 Democratic presidential nominees and other Democratic candidates. “I’m here to work for them and with them to make sure that the party is inclusive and continually fighting for LGBT rights,” he said in an interview with the Washington Blade.

He will also help recruit and elect LGBT delegates to the 2016 DNC Convention here in Philadelphia, and other LGBT-supportive politicians on the state, federal and local levels. “We’re working not just for the presidency but for the presidency all the way down in making sure that LGBT people know that the Democratic Party has had their back and will continue to have their back.”

Meloy is the first person to hold the position of director of LGBT Engagement since 2013. At the moment, the position isn’t permanent, but filled during presidential election cycles. There is a push to make the position permanent, though Meloy told the Blade he isnÆt sure about the DNC’s long-term plans for the job. “The Democratic Party has been continually committed to the rights of LGBT people regardless of this position being filled and I don’t see that changing any time soon,” he said.
