The Fresh Prince’s “Uncle Phil” dies at 65
R.I.P honorary West Philadelphian James Avery.
James Avery, aka Philip Banks, aka Uncle Phil, aka Will Smith’s lovably pompous uncle on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”, has died at 65 of complications from open-heart surgery.
According to a Wikipedia page apparently written by some very devoted FBOBA historians, Uncle Phil was born on a farm in North Carolina before moving to Baltimore at 16. He then attended Princeton and Harvard Law School, before becoming a judge in Southern California. (The real Phil Banks was raised in Atlantic City.)
