Phillies’ Bastardo Takes 50-Game Suspension in Biogenesis Scandal
One of 14 MLB players nabbed in the ongoing Biogenesis scandal, Phils left-handed reliever Antonio Bastardo has officially accepted a 50-game suspension as punishment for breaking the league’s drug policy. Of the others caught doping, 11 others have accepted similar suspensions, with superstar Alex Rodriguez serving as the only holdout in the whole ordeal.
The suspensions come in the wake of accusations that Biogenesis, an anti-aging clinic, distributed performance-enhancing drugs to major sports stars including Ryan Braun, Nelson Cruz and Sergio Escalona. The Phils, meanwhile, continue to struggle, most recently suffering a sweep by the Braves over the weekend. [Fox]
UPDATE: A-Rod has been suspended through the 2014 season as part of punishment for violating the MLB’s PED, adding up to a 211-game suspension total. [Newsday]
