The zoo reports: “Now you must be thinking – wait a minute…teach a penguin to swim?! In fact – penguins don’t naturally know how to swim on their own. In the wild, parent’s encourage hatchlings to swim in shallow, protected waters. And in zoos and aquariums, trainers slowly introduce penguins to the act of swimming, guiding them in the water as they learn how to use their flippers and hold their breath underwater.”
