Philly Archdiocese Sponsors Gay Marriage Protest In D.C.

Philadelphia Gay News reports the Archdiocese of Philadelphia will sponsor a May 26 march by the National Organization for Marriage—an anti-gay rights group—to protest the legalization of gay marriage. PGN says the Philly diocese is the only one listed in the nation as a sponsor. The Pennsylvania Catholic Conference is also a sponsor. Spokespersons for both organizations said they weren’t providing monetary support for the march, only promoting the event to their members. The event takes place the same day gay marriage arguments go before the Supreme Court.

“Catholics believe that a marriage between one man and one woman is something special and unique. It is the foundation of the family,” said Amy Hill, PCC spokeswman. “In turn, the family is the basic unit of society. Thus, while marriage is a personal relationship, it also has public significance.”
