Olympics Hero, Amputee Oscar Pistorius Now Suspected of Killing Girlfriend
Here’s a way to make that movie-worthy comeback story go straight to hell…
Wall Street Journal: “JOHANNESBURG—South African police have detained double-amputee Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius after his girlfriend was found shot dead. South African Police arrived at a Pretoria home early Thursday to find a 30-year-old woman fatally shot. Police said they found a 9mm pistol at the scene and are carrying out ballistic tests on the weapon. Police said they laid a charge of murder against a 26-year-old male Thursday, but declined to identify the man.”
Reuters: “South African Olympic and Paralympic track star Oscar Pistorius, known as the “Blade Runner” for his racing prosthetics, was charged on Thursday with murdering his girlfriend at his home in Pretoria. Johannesburg’s Talk Radio 702 said Pistorius was believed to have shot his girlfriend, a model, in the head and arm, although the circumstances were unclear. The radio had said before the murder charge that he might have mistaken her for a burglar. Reeva Steenkamp was reported to have been dating Pistorius for a year. In the social pages of last weekend’s Sunday Independent she described him as having “impeccable” taste.”
Yahoo Eurosport: “Reports had claimed that Pistorius accidentally mistook his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp for a burglar, shooting her four times in the head and arm. Police now have 48 hours to question him and continue their investigations, with Pistorius due to appear in court at 14:00 UK time, according to police spokeswoman Sarah Mcira. A police spokeswoman said that they were “surprised” about reports of a perceived break-in, and confirmed that there have been “previous incidents” at Pistorius’ home of “a domestic nature”. It was also revealed that he “appeared to be in massive shock.””
USA Today: “Some media commentators speculated that the victim may have been in the act of surprising Pistorius for Valentine’s Day. However, police have yet to confirm the woman’s relationship with the Olympic and Paralympic athlete. … Pistorius, 26, made history by being the first double amputee to take part in the Olympics. Known as the “Blade Runner” for his use of carbon fiber prosthetic blades, Pistorius won gold medals in the 4 x 100 meter relay and 400 meter individual events at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London.”
