Fans in Czech Republic Are Also Racist Toward Wayne Simmonds
Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds is spending his lockout playing hockey in Europe. He spent some time in Germany and he’s now playing in the Czech Republic. After a fight in a recent game, fans chanted “opice” at Simmonds. The English translation for the word is “monkey.” The team chastised fans and was fined by the league. Simmonds, one of only two dozen or so black players in the NHL last season, has previously dealt with racism at games. In a preseason game in Canada last year, a fan threw a banana peel on the ice as Simmonds was taking a shootout attempt. [Puck Daddy]
