Big Bird’s Friends Plan Million Puppet March in D.C.

It looks like Big Bird and Elmo have some friends who are down to demonstrate. Supporters of public funding for PBS have planned a “Million Puppet March” for D.C. on November 3rd. The event on the National Mall is expected to draw quite a crowd—its Facebook page has already garnered more than 20,000 “Likes.” People are encouraged to make homemade sock puppets and muppets to bring to D.C. on the 3rd. In a statement released on the event’s Facebook page, the group’s founders explain that they’re trying to organize political support for the public funding of PBS.

Bring your favorite puppet and join us in Washington DC on November 3rd, 2012 for a morning of fun in the largest gathering of puppets to ever March on Washington in support of public broadcasting.

We are private individuals and are not affiliated with nor do we represent Sesame Street, Sesame Workshop or Disney. The puppets we are bringing are our own. We don’t want anyone to be disappointed but we do not anticipate any participation from any of these organizations.

If you can’t join us in person (or in puppet) in DC, we are working on a way for you to participate virtually in the largest gathering of puppets around the world to show support for public media.

Originally, the event was called the “Million Muppet March,” but was changed to include other types of puppets. They’ve also put memes and videos to use while trying to earn the attention of people on the Internets.

From the sounds of it, thousands of men, women and puppets will be gathered on the National Mall just three days before the election. At the very least it’s going to make for one hell of a photo op.
