Ready for Some Football?
On the field, the men and women of the Greater Philadelphia Flag Football League (GPFFL) are serious about the game. Off the field, they’re just as serious about the community. That’s why for the second year in a row, the athletic organization is presenting the Big Game Event on Sunday, Feb. 5 (5 p.m.), to celebrate the Super Bowl at the International House in University City.
“It’s a great LGBT event to attend,” says Kory Aversa, a spokesperson for GPFFL, “with fun-loving people who include those who are football fans, music fans and people who want to give back to the community.” He says that last year, the event attracted not only the LGBT community, but also straight friends and sports fans of all ages. “For the die-hard sports fans, the 350-seat theatre provides the perfect setting to sit back, relax and watch the game,” says Aversa – with no shortage of food and drinks.
The event raises money for both the GPFFL and Action AIDS. Last year, the event raised $5,000. Aversa says the league hopes to increase that number to $7,000 next month. Donations from the event will help provide an array of services to more than 5,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in the Philadelphia region.
And again this year, guests are invited to watch the “Big Game on the Big Screen” at the Ibrahim Theater. The event starts with a new VIP reception at 5 p.m. (doors open for general admission at 6 p.m.). As a bonus, all VIPs will receive a free $25 gift card from B2 Salon, along with several other surprises. The event also includes food (like desserts from Dolci diTommaso), drinks, open bar, a silent auction and raffle tickets to win some great prizes.
One of the highlights for any Super Bowl fan are the commercials and, of course, the half-time show. And it doesn’t get any more gay-friendly this year. Not only will Kelly Clarkson be singing the National Anthem – but Madonna is set to perform the half-time show.
