Students Riot After Board of Trustees Fires Joe Paterno. Last night Joe Paterno was fired by Penn State’s Board of Trustees over the phone. President Graham Spanier was also ousted just before the university’s students rushed downtown to riot. A news van was flipped, riot police broke out the pepper spray, and things got out of hand. Day Two of Vince Fumo’s Resentencing. At 9 a.m., the second day of Vince Fumo’s resentencing hearing will begin in Philadelphia. The former state Senator was convicted of 137 counts of corruption before being sentenced to less than five years in prison. That sentence was over turned, leading to today’s hearing. [Inquirer]
Man Killed by Center City SEPTA Train. All sorts of problems with the SEPTA schedule in the city this morning after a man was struck and killed by a train at 22nd Street in Center City. [FOX 29]
Flyers Lose to Lightning in OT. Philly fell to the Lightning 2-1 in overtime in Chris Pronger’s first game back from an eye injury. The Flyers used a controversial tactic in the game by wasting time skating the puck around their own end. After three periods and an overtime session, though, the tactic didn’t prove to be enough. Governor Corbett Signs Texting Ban Into Law. A state ban on texting while driving became law yesterday when Governor Corbett signed a bill passed by the state legislature. The bill will be enacted 120 days after the signing, meaning that in four months, texting while driving will officially become a primary offense for which you can be pulled over. [CBS 3]
Jersey Bus Driver Gets D.U.I. With 25 Kids on Her Bus. A bus driver in Westhampton Township, New Jersey, was arrested a little before 3 p.m. yesterday when it’s alleged she was driving a bus—filled with 25 middle schoolers—with a BAC three times the legal limit. [FOX 29]
