Cravings: Coffee

What is this, Bean Town?

A cup of joe isn’t just a caffeine fix anymore — Philly is awash in direct-trade, artisan-roasted, small-batch beans. The trendy labels translate to seriously fresh coffee: Specialty roasters pick individual growers’ best beans and bake them to a light bronze (rather than harsh black) for peak flavor. Sip a brewed-before-your-eyes mugful at Head House Square’s Bodhi Coffee, where Bobby Logue, his partner Tommy Henneman, and their baristas pour hot water over freshly ground Stumptown Coffee — a cult favorite from Portland, Oregon. At Town Hall Coffee Co. in Merion, Tim Noble and company offer 11 varieties of top-notch java from roasters like Intelligentsia and Counter Culture. Even Jose Garces has launched his own line, using Rojo’s Roastery of Lambertville. Brew his Garces Trading  Company beans (pictured) yourself, or sample a cup from the coffee kiosk adjacent to the chef’s new restaurant, JG Domestic Fine Food & Spirits, in the Cira Centre.
