Rent It: Shutter Island (R, 2010). Forget the film’s preview with the chalky-skinned, dark-eyed bald woman. This imperfect Scorcese thriller is more moody madness than horror-film scares. Just don’t read the Lehane novel first; otherwise, you won’t be able to fully enjoy the plot’s psychological puzzle. My Grade: B
Queue It: The Ice Storm (R, 1997). Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) directs a powerful cast in an examination of loneliness among ’70s suburban families—with truly exceptional performances from Joan Allen and Sigourney Weaver. Also with Kevin Kline, Tobey Maguire, Christina Ricci and Elijah Wood. My Grade: A
