Rent It: Daybreakers (R, 2009). Ethan Hawke stars as a vampire researcher attempting to save mankind (or rather vampirekind) before the blood supply dries up. It’s a starkly dark idea with great potential; however, the plot begins to lose focus and meanders into a gory, unsatisfying finale. Also starring Sam Neill and Willem Dafoe. My Grade: C

Queue It: City of God (R, 2002). A passionate and violent examination of gang-life in Rio de Janeiro slums—easily one of the best movies in recent years. My Grade: A+
