Stuff you can’t miss in August

FLASHBACKS
The 1980s
C’mon, you know you’ve been longing for the simpler days of Reaganomics and bad hair decisions. Relive the ’80s with some of its best music: Men at Work front man Colin Hay (World Cafe Live, 8/21); a better-with-age Cyndi Lauper (House of Blues AC, 8/7); lords of synth-pop Depeche Mode (Borgata, 8/1); and the Chrissie Hynde-helmed Pretenders (Tower, 8/13).

EATS
Corn Season
This time of year, treat yourself to the delights of sun-drenched, juicy sweet corn. Pick it straight from the stalk at Johnson’s Corner Farm in Medford (johnsonsfarm.com), Langhorne’s Styer Orchard (styerorchard.com), or Highland Orchards in West Chester (highlandorchards.net). Lazy types can visit Buylocalpa.org for a list of farm stands.

TRADITIONS
48th Philadelphia Folk Festival
Break out the camping gear, DEET and rolling papers for three days of fun and live music, including Low Anthem (pictured) and the Decemberists, at Schwenksville’s Old Pool Farm (8/14-16, pfs.org).

MAN-EATERS
Shark Week
Your tot may never venture into the water again: 550,000 gallons of water populated by more than a dozen species of ravenous, bloodthirsty (cool!) aquatic beasts. Touch them if you dare (8/1-9, Adventure Aquarium, Camden, adventureaquarium.com).

LEADING MEN
Paul Newman
Last year, the world lost a legend of the big screen (and philanthropy) when Paul Newman died at 83. Throughout August, the Bryn Mawr Film Institute celebrates his life with three films that accentuate his bad-boy side: his arrogant cowboy in Hud (8/4); the chain-gang rabble-rouser in Cool Hand Luke (right) (8/11); and Robert Redford’s bank-robbing partner in Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid (8/18).
