The No-B.S. Guide to COVID-19 Testing in Philadelphia
There are many places where you can get tested for coronavirus in Philadelphia. Here’s the information you’ll need to choose the right one.
Sign up to stay on top of Philly's growing health innovation scene.
Getting tested for COVID-19 has become a part of our new normal, a thing that we may need to do almost as regularly as we purchase new masks. If you’ve been exposed to someone with confirmed COVID-19, have symptoms of the virus, or have been referred by your healthcare professional, you might need a COVID test. While the CDC recently reversed its prior recommendations for who should be tested, most experts still agree it’s a good idea to get tested if you’ve been exposed, whether you have symptoms or not. But finding the right place for testing is easier said than done.
There are more than 50 COVID-19 testing sites throughout Philadelphia. Choosing the right one often requires a time-consuming process of calling several sites to confirm the types of tests each site offers, whether a referral or appointment is required, whether insurance is required, or if you can be tested for free. The City’s website is not always up to date with newly opened testing site information and it lacks many of the critical details you’ll need to choose the right place. After you’ve been tested, perhaps the worst part of the process is waiting for results. Some sites take upwards of two full weeks to return results, which is quite a long time to be in quarantine worrying if you have the virus or not.
We want to spare you the stress of jumping through hurdles to find the right place to get tested.
Below, you’ll find our no-B.S. guide to COVID-19 testing in Philly. We’ve divided the sites into helpful categories that will make it easier for you to find the right testing site for your needs. Make sure the site you plan on visiting offers what you’re looking for before you head out.

15-Minute Test Results
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved four rapid tests for COVID-19, to date. These tests detect virus antigens, proteins found on the surface of the virus rather than the virus itself. While faster, the FDA warns that rapid tests may yield results that are less accurate than tests that are analyzed in a lab. Rapid tests are not yet being covered by any insurance plans. These are the only testing sites in the city that offer rapid antigen testing.
