Man Crush Monday: DJ Carl Michaels

Every week, Philly gay gents share their local picks for Man Crush Monday. This week: legendary Gayborhood DJ—and one of G Philly‘s monthly columnists—Carl Michaels.

DJ Carl Michaels

My name is Carl. I live in South Philly (Graduate Hospital to be exact, so I tell people in the suburbs that I live in Rittenhouse.) By day I am a marketing strategist for a healthcare IT company (contain the excitement) and by night I DJ at some of the best clubs in Philly. Anyway, this isn’t eharmony, it’s me telling you who my local man crushes are. Here I go:

Keith Stiles

Keith’s awesome smile, warm demeanor and quirky sense of humor make him a total catch. It doesn’t hurt that he’s super handsome and has an awesome bulldog named Katie (she'll steal your heart, too.) You will find Keith serving drinks, food and realness behind the bar at Tabu. When? Pretty much always.

Mike Damico

In the futile straight-guy man-crush category, we have Mike Damico, Gayborhood bartender extraordinaire, cat meme enthusiast, and master of ceremonies to every room he enters. Mike is fun, spirited, thoughtful and hilarious. Go say hi to Mike at Icandy one night. You’ll feel like you already know him.

Javas Ganguly

You know him as DJ Javascript, one of the best DJs in town. Javas lights up any room. He’s super smart, a lot goofy, totally genuine, and can always roll with my twisted, filter-free humor. Fun fact: Before we officially met, Javas referred to me as the “hot Drew Carey,” and I said he was a “hotter Aziz Ansari.” Now that’s synergy.

Tyjuan Pierce

Ty’s reputation precedes him. He’s always upbeat but doesn’t put up with nonsense. Ty handles himself with poise and rarely loses his cool. Ty’s wardrobe is his watermark, and I have even found myself fully jealous of his shoes. Philly is lucky to have him. He is a perfect representation of our community’s diversity and energy.

Chris Tijerino

Embarrassing disclaimer: Chris and I don’t know each other very well, so I must acknowledge that I am a bit of a creeper. Anyway, Chris is a super-talented photographer who lives in Delaware with his super-lucky boyfriend. I remember Chris when he was a wee gay youth coming to Bump for our Thursday night parties. We didn’t really know each other very well, but in creeper fashion, I friended him on Facebook so I could see all his dreaminess and, of course, his awesome photography.

Matt Emeigh-McBride

For as long as I’ve known him, I had a huge crush on Matt. I never stood a chance; I would blush and run away like a school girl when he came around. I am glad that he got snapped up by his husband, the lovely Larry Emeigh-McBride; not only is it great to see an adorable happily married LGBT couple, but now I can finally stop writing Matt’s name on my binder.

Matthew Ray

One of the most intelligent and clever people you will find in Philly and beyond. Matt is co-creator/co-owner of Philly social media marketing agency ChatterBlast Media. Get to know him. He knows everything, and his world view is positive and eye-opening.
