There are a lot of reasons to outsource your Thanksgiving pies and desserts this year. Perhaps you’re busy working on the rest of the feast, you don’t like to bake, or you simply want to relax this year. It is a holiday, remember? So buy yourself a little time and brain capacity this in the form of a delicious, homey pie that is still made with lots of love. Here are the best places to preorder your pies this Thanksgiving.
Fiore Fine Foods, Kensington
Fiore’s pumpkin pie is sure to turn heads around the Thanksgiving Day table. They add fancy, yet tasty, flourishes, like adding a splash of bourbon to their pecan pie and topping their pumpkin pie with some candied pepitas. If pie isn’t your style, they’re also offering cookies, gelato, and sorbeto. See the full pastry menu here, and note that they also have a separate menu of savory Thanksgiving foods here. Orders must be submitted by November 21st.
Pick-up date: November 27th
New June Bakery, Fairmount
I am not a person who is deeply motivated by pie, which is why for my Thanksgiving feast this year, I’ve ordered a Thanksgiving sampler box from New June. It includes pear pie shortcake, pumpkin olive oil chocolate chip cake, carrot cake with pear and lemon, cardamom pistachio cream cake, and brown butter cake with fennel and blueberry. If you are more committed to pie than I am, or you need a whole one, they’ve also got spiced double-crust apple and pear pies, caramelized honey pumpkin pies, and more. Orders must be in by November 15th. See the full menu here.
Pick-up date: November 27th
Dreamworld Bakes, West Philly
Ashley Huston’s cakes are some of my favorite sweets I’ve eaten this year, so I’d definitely trust her with my Thanksgiving pies. I’m particularly interested in her “Mixed Kid” pie, which combines both pumpkin and sweet potato, as well as her caramelized banana cream pie. Who says there’s not room for a new dessert at the table?
Pick-up dates: November 27th and 28th
Cake Life Bake Shop, Fishtown
Cake Life does a nice job with baked goods that are simultaneously nostalgic and just slightly better than what you could reasonably make at home. Case in point: they add a rich, homemade caramel to their apple pie which is chock-full of fruit and topped with a buttery oat crumble. It’s the attention to detail and minor tweaks that make Cake Life’s treats insanely good. See the full menu here.
Pick-up dates: November 27th and 28th; delivery also available.
Bloomsday, Queen Village
For some reason it is controversial in my family to add chocolate to a pecan pie, but I think Bloomsday has the right idea with their pecan-chocolate tart. While you’re picking it up, you might as well also get some fresh croissants to feed your family for breakfast! Full menu here.
Pick-up dates: November 27th
High Street Bakery, Washington Square West
In addition to their epic breads, High Street always offers a couple of really good pies to round out your Thanksgiving offerings. This year they’ve got sweet potato pie with meringue, five-spiced apple pie with oat crumble, and chocolate silk pie with whipped cream. I think all three would make a nice dessert spread.
Pick-up dates: November 27th
Second Daughter, South Philly
You know what sounds better than a cherry pie filled with sickly sweet canned fruit? A sour cherry pie filled with house-made preserved fruit from Second Daughter. In addition to that incredible offering, they’ve also taken their famous brownies and put them in a pie crust so that we can all fulfill our dreams of eating brownies on Thanksgiving. Full menu here.
Pick-up dates: November 27th and 28th
Mighty Bread, East Passyunk
Mighty Bread wants to save you a headache, or three. They’ve got perfect quiche to serve your family on Thanksgiving morning, sweet potato dinner rolls with compound butter so you don’t have to deal with yeast (the worst), AND classic apple and pumpkin pies. Full menu here.
Pick-up dates: November 26th and 27th
Crust Vegan Bakery, Manayunk & South Philly
If you have a person with a strict allergy or dietary restriction among those you’ll be feeding, it’s a good idea to leave the baking of those specialty desserts to people who know their way around things like gluten-free flour and dairy-free butter. Crust has plenty of options, including gluten-full and gluten-free vegan cheesecakes, pumpkin pies, apple pies, and pecan pies. They also have biscuits, which seems like a nice touch for our vegan friends. Specific allergen information is here.
Pick-up dates: November 26th and 27th
