Side-by-Side Pastry and Roast Pork Sandwich Shops Are Opening on Washington Avenue
Small Oven pastry shop and Porcos porchetteria are opening in the old Kermit's Bake Shoppe space between Point Breeze and Graduate Hospital.
Some happy Friday news, especially for those of you who live in Point Breeze and Graduate Hospital. The old Kermit’s Bake Shoppe space at 2204 Washington Avenue will become a dual-concept operation: a specialty pastry shop/cafe called Small Oven and porchetteria called Porco’s.
All of this courtesy of Chad Durkin, the pastry chef who opened Kermit’s back in 2013. (Durkin went on to become the director of research and product development for celebrity chef Buddy Valastro of Cake Boss fame.) At Small Oven, he’ll offer a selection of bite-sized pastries — eclairs, cream puffs, mousse cakes, tarts, galettes, cookie sandwiches — available per piece or by the baker’s dozen fresh from the case. Porco’s will be more of a traditional BYO situation, a restaurant (with a walk-up take-out window!) built around the Italian-style roast pork sandwich. There will be more signature sandwiches on offer, too, all served on house-baked ciabatta bread, plus some vegetarian options, salads.
Both Small Oven’s and Porco’s openings are slated for sometime this fall.
