Niall Murphy, a longtime Fergie’s bartender, is bringing a neighborhood bar with an industrial vibe to Kensington.

Sutton’s will open at 1706 North 5th Street, with 10 beer taps, cocktails, wine, and elevated bar fare. Murphy, a history buff and native of Ireland, was inspired to name the spot for the Sutton family, English shipbuilders who opened a foundry and ironworks at Front and Girard in the 1840s.

“They bounced back after disaster struck in the form of a tornado. It ripped the roof right off of their warehouse” Murphy said. “They came back from it; that’s what Philadelphia is all about to me. Sutton’s Bar is a nod to the past industrial might of Kensington and the hardworking people of many nations that came to call it home.”

He’s brought on Katie Murphy (no relation), formerly of Girard, as executive chef, and Dan Carr of the erstwhile Fat Ham is developing a slate of craft cocktails. The menu will include bar staples like burgers, fish and chips, and wings, plus lighter fare like Moroccan-spiced chicken, a falafel platter, and warm quinoa salad.

Look for Sutton’s to open sometime in August.
