The First-Ever Wawa Is Closing Its Doors Today
The original Wawa location in Delaware County is closing down after 52 years on Friday.
The store, located on Ridley Township on MacDade Boulevard, opened on April 16th, 1964. Its closing was announced in 2014. The town won’t be Wawa-less, though. A new “super” Wawa is opening a few minutes away from the old store this morning.
“Throughout history, times change, and we as a company try to change with them,” Wawa board chairman Dick Wood told the Delaware County Times at a preview on Thursday for the new store.
According to the newspaper, the new store will have gas pumps, more electronic signs advertising food, and a community board where people can post announcements and pictures. It’ll also have a selfie station with the original pole sign from the store in the 1960s.
The grand opening of the new store will include a parade centered on Wawa history, as well as a hoagie-making competition for charity, according to NBC 10.
