Philly Beer Week: Food And Beer Events This Weekend With Beer (And Food)

This is it. Philly Beer Week is upon us. And while we’re sure you’re making your plans in a completely rational and responsible manner, we’d just like to remind you that food is not the enemy. It’s what your body needs in order to remain in the upright position generally deemed most effective for drinking more beer.

There are a ton (literally hundreds) of beer-focused food events happening over the next week, but in order to get you through the all-important first couple nights (and mornings) of Beer Week, we’ve picked out the best ones happening tonight, tomorrow and Sunday. There’s everything from street dumplings and breakfast cereal to full-on lobster dinners and tasting menus highlighted here, so pick the level of classiness with which you are most comfortable, make your reservations (where required), then go forth and have a blast.

Friday, May 29

15% off your lunch or dinner for wearing a beer t-shirt?

Pizzeria Vetri, 11am-11pm
Sure, why not? Pizzeria Vetri is offering a 15% discount for anyone who comes in decked out in beer swag (hats, t-shirts, flip-flops, what-have-you). Since you’re probably wearing something with a beer logo on it right now, why not take advantage of the deal?

Tired Hands Goes To Aldine

Aldine, 5pm-midnight
Two different four-course menus to choose from–herbivore and omnivore–with different Tired Hands beers for each course? That alone would be good enough. But the Tired Hands crew brewed two special beers just for this event (Luminous Calcidity and Ald Bruid), which is what makes it truly special. Tickets are $75. Get ’em through Open Table.

A Pig Roast on 6th Street

Bainbridge Street Barrel House, 7-11pm
They’re bringing in a whole pig from Green Meadow Farm, roasting it, and serving it with picnic-style sides. That’s good. They’ve also got 6 beers on tap from Lancaster Brewing, including two made exclusively for beer week. That’s even better.

Saturday, May 30

Morning Wood Beer Brunch

Grey Lodge, 10am-2pm
They’re talking wood-aged beers, you pervs. Plus a brunch menu. Both are good ways to get things going in the morning.

Because Who Doesn’t Want A Spongebob Squarepants-themed beer event?

The Institute Bar, 11am-11pm
No, really. They’re pouring Heavy Seas, decorating the place like the Krusty Crab and serving Crabby Patties while playing episodes of Spongebob on the bar TVs. Fuck you, hangover.

It’s A Firkin Riot!

Johnny Brenda’s, noon-midnight
Fish and chips, meat pies, British rock from the DJ and firkins all day and all night from more breweries than I can list here. Just go already.

Drink Here, Get Crabs

Old Eagle Tavern, noon-10pm
Maryland beers, steamed Maryland crabs, crab cakes, repeat.

It’s A Sausage Fest

Good Dog Bar, 2pm-9pm
Sierra Nevada on tap, sausages in the kitchen courtesy of the Good Dog crew.

Like A Renaissance Fair Without The Stupid Accents

Victoria Freehouse, 3-6pm
They’re doing Ancient Ales by the goblet, poring mead, and serving up meat pies, sausage rolls, turkey legs and are encouraging people to come dressed in costumes. Because that’s just how they roll at the Freehouse.

Here’s Where You Go To Eat Lobster With Your Beer

Hop Angel Brauhaus, 3pm-10pm
Lobster bisque, lobster rolls, lobster pot pie and whole lobster bakes. Also, there’ll be beer.

5th Annual Fried Chicken Run

American Sardine Bar, 5-11pm
Yes, there will be fried chicken. Yes, there will be beer. But fair warning: There might also be running required.

Oh, Wait. And More Lobster, Too

Prohibition Taproom, 6pm-midnight
Beers from Yards, special firkins, and $30 will get you a three course meal with clams, a one-pound lobster, mussels, kielbasa, corn, and cobbler for dessert. How you gonna beat that?

Sunday, May 31

13 Straight Hours Of Amazing Food And Beer

East Passyunk Craft Beer Day, 11am-midnight
Ok, seriously? Too many things to list. But suffice it to say that 8 different breweries and 12 different restaurants will keep the food and alcohol flowing all day and all night. You could spend all day walking the blocks and not feel like you missed out on a thing.

Except Maybe This…

Varga Bar, 11am-3pm
Milk stouts from Left Hand brewing, paired with breakfast cereal, ice cream and brunch food.

…Or This…

South Philly Tap Room, 7pm-midnight
I’ll let them describe it: “This dinner will be epic – expect rare Founders draughts like KBS, Mosaic Promise and Blushing Monk alongside a mutli-course feast. Tickets on sale now – call or visit the website to purchase!(215) 271-7787.”

…Or This.

Alla Spina, 6:30pm-10pm
A two-restaurant, two-brewery culinary cage match with Osteria Philly and Pizza Boy Brewing facing off against Osteria Jersey and Carton Brewing. Four courses each, four paired beers per side, four secret ingredients, plus WWF on the TVs. Tickets for this one are $65 a head. Call 215-600-0017 to reserve yours.
