Best of Philly 2014: The Taste Tests
Best Green Juice: Sip-N-Glo
The Finalists: Pangea Juice & Co., Queen Village; Sip-N-Glo, South Street; Sook Hee’s Produce, Center City; Yellow Juice Bar, Rittenhouse.
It’s hard to believe there are fruits and veggies and things that are good for you in these juices. That’s especially true for Sip-N-Glo, which picked up the most votes for its One Love, an elixir of cucumber and spinach made sweet and spicy with apple, pineapple and ginger. 932 South Street, South Street, 267-273-0639.
Best Tomato Pie: Corropolese Bakery & Deli
The Finalists: Conshohocken Italian Bakery, Conshohocken; Corropolese Bakery & Deli, various locations; Iannelli’s Bakery, South Philly;
Sarcone’s Bakery, Italian Market.
We heard people arguing about this one well after the tasting was over, but when all was said and done, Corropolese Bakery took home the gold. This pie’s simplicity makes it irresistible — a thick smear of sweet red sauce, an oil-rich crust and a sprinkle of parm. Various locations.
Best Whoopie Pie: Flying Monkey Bakery
The Finalists: Beiler’s Bakery, Center City; Flying Monkey Bakery, Center City; Kermit’s Bake Shoppe, Point Breeze; Whipped Bakeshop, Fishtown.
This cookie-pie-cake mash-up has the power to dethrone the cupcake as Philly’s most popular snack, especially with the light and spongy options these bakers brought. In the end, it was the classic chocolate/vanilla version from Flying Monkey Bakery that won over the tasters. Reading Terminal Market, 51 North 12th Street, Center City, 215-928-0340.
