Go Here Now: PHS Pop-Up Garden on Broad Street
After hemming and hawing on where to head after happy hour last Friday night a friend suggested checking out the new Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Pop Up Garden on Broad Street, across from the Kimmel Center. The garden offers food from Jose Garces’ catering division (the food is not by Morgan’s Pier’s George Sabatino as previously announced) as well as local craft beers, frozen margaritas and local root beer.
The design of the space will feel a bit familiar, as the design has been completed by Groundswell Design Group, the team behind Morgan’s Pier and the outdoor area at Talula’s Garden. Picnic tables dot the area as does as a terraced area that is great for people watching. On a mild summer night, the space takes on a magical feel, illuminated by twinkling market lights.
The Garces Group is manning the food stand, offering a picnic menu of hot sandwiches like, chipotle short rib with horseradish creme fraiche, veggie sandwich with grilled zucchini, tomato conserva, basil pesto and arugula; and a South Philly dog with caramelized onions and cheese on a potato roll. Lighter bites like summer melon, Philly pretzel bites, chorizo Bilboa and pie-in-a-jar desserts are also available.
The beer garden offers local craft beer and cider including Yards Philly Pale, Victory Summer Love and Philadelphia Brewing Company’s Commonwealth Cider. Yards root beer is available as a non-alcoholic option, or spike it with one of several flavored vodka selections.
