Thomas Scary, M.D, M.A. is a Board Certified Psychiatrist who treats adolescents (18+) and adults as part of his practice at Rittenhouse Psychiatric Associates. He provides comprehensive care to his patients, including medications when indicated, and utilizes a variety of therapy modalities. If a patient has a therapist already, he is available for medication management. Likewise, he may recommend that patients see a separate therapist if he believes that will ensure optimal treatment for his patients.

Dr. Scary is comfortable seeing patients with medical comorbidities, multiple psychiatric diagnoses, and comorbid substance use disorders. He has a special interest in mood disorders, including bipolar disorder, and is trained in all other areas of adult psychiatry, including anxiety disorders, ADHD, and medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for substance use disorders. He is willing to see consultations for second opinions. As part of a comprehensive care model, Dr. Scary will work with your healthcare team, including other doctors, therapists, etc., to ensure the highest level of care.

What's your background, education and training?

Dr. Scary graduated from New York University, where he simultaneously studied music and the pre-medical curriculum. He then attended the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, where he completed a four-year dual degree program, receiving both his M.D. and an M.A. in Urban Bioethics.

After medical school, Dr. Scary completed his adult psychiatry residency at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, serving as Chief Resident of the outpatient department in his final year. His robust training included work in various inpatient units, consultations to medical wards, and emergency room psychiatry, as well as outpatient work treating patients with depression, anxiety and panic disorders, bipolar disorder, OCD, ADHD, PTSD, and substance use disorders. He has experience working with a diverse patient population, including patients of various cultural backgrounds, LGBTQ+ patients, and patients in various stages of gender-affirming treatment.

Hours of operation

Monday through Thursday 9AM-8PM. Friday 9-5PM. Saturday 10-3PM.

Fee-for-service provider.

If you have out-of-network reimbursement with your insurance plan, we will be happy to supply invoices for services rendered and bills paid, so that patients may submit for partial reimbursement to their insurance companies. Call for information. Patients may also use HSA accounts for our services.
